Interview with Ivo Pitanguy
Founder, Previous Cosmetics
After appearing in Geneva as a featured speaker at the public conference entitled “The Many Faces of Beauty, Brazilian plastic surgeon and founder of a new cosmetics line, Ivo Pitanguy answers a few questions.
What can you tell us about Previous, your new cosmetics line?
IP: In my clinic in Rio de Janeiro, we have a non-incisive procedures department that takes care of pre- and post-operatory procedures and dermatological activities, which includes everything from preparation for laser treatments to collagen injections. My daughter Gisela, who is a psychiatrist, heads this department and she is the one who developed Previous. All of the products have been scientifically tested in our own labs and at the University of Campinas and they are in daily use in my Dona Mariana clinic. The line is a product of modern cosmetology and it is already a big success after just one year.
What is your distribution strategy for the brand?
IP: For the first year, we decided to go with regional distribution. Today, we have outlets in almost all of the large Brazilian cities: Sao Paulo, Brasilia, Belo-Horizonte, etc. Now we are thinking about developing in other countries with a priority on Switzerland, where we are looking for a distributor. An international launch for Previous is definitely part of our plans for the future.
Quadrimex Acquires Le Nigen Cosmetics
French chemical company, Quadrimex, has made its first decisive move into the beauty and personal care industry with the acquisition of the toiletries and cosmetics business of the Le Nigen N Industries group. Quadrimex will acquire Le Nigen’s 2,500m2 aerosol production site in St. Benoît near Poitiers, France; several aerosol packaging assembly lines; an R&D laboratory and all Le Nigen’s brands. Quadrimex had already occupied a part of the facility since it acquired Euro-Absorbant in October 1999.
The new business is expected to contribute FF80m/ $10.7m in annual sales in a full fiscal year and produce efficiency savings from synergies between the two companies. Quadrimex had net attributable profit of FF5.4m/ $724,111 for the 15-month fiscal period running from April 1999 to June 2000 on sales of FF216m/ $28.9m, versus FF6m/ $804,570 in the 12-month year-earlier period on sales of FF176m/ $23.6m. It forecasts comparable sales of FF250m/ $33.5m and net profit representing more than 4% of turnover in the coming fiscal year.
European Consumers Call for Labelling Changes
The magazine Health Which? has published a study showing that ingredients in cosmetics known to cause allergic reactions are not currently listed on labels. The study also found that the listing of most ingredients by their chemical name or in Latin can lead to confusion for customers. For example, peanut oil goes by the name of Arachis Hypogaea on cosmetics labels – a name few consumers can be expected to know. Although more than 10,000 ingredients used in cosmetics are required by law to appear on labels, there are certain exceptions.
These include any of the 2,600 fragrance chemicals currently listed under the catch-all term “parfum.” Nikki Ratcliff, senior researcher for Health Which? commented, “At the moment, if you think you are allergic to fragrance chemicals, your only option is to avoid anything which has added ‘parfum‚’ on the label which means ruling out a huge number of products. We welcome the proposed change in the law from the European Commission which would require cosmetics manufacturers to list any of the 24 fragrance ingredients that can cause allergic reactions.
