Harvey Nichols to Open UK Concept Stores in 2001
Harvey Nichols’ first new concept store will open in the upscale Mailbox business complex in Birmingham, UK in the second half of 2001. The 15,000sq. ft./1,394m2 store is the first of ten smaller format stores destined for UK cities where the retailer is not yet present and for which it will develop its own brand of merchandise. Currently there are two Harvey Nichols stores in the UK (London and Leeds) and one in Saudi Arabia (Riyadh), which opened in May and recently won the "Store of the Year" award for its interior design at London’s Retail Interiors Award ceremony. Two other major UK developments are in their early stages.
A 65,000sq. ft./6,039m2 store due to open in St. Andrew Square, Edinburgh (Scotland) in autumn 2002 is currently under construction, and work will begin on a 65,000sq. ft./ 6,039m2 Manchester outlet in the first half of next year. The Manchester store opens in autumn 2003. In the six months to September 30, Harvey Nichols achieved pretax profit of £6.7m/ $9.7m, an increase of 10% on the equivalent 1999 period. Group turnover increased more than 6% to £66.3m/ $95.5m during the first half, with sales growth from each trading outlet and royalty income from the licensed store in Riyadh helping to drive turnover.
Marionnaud Opens on the Champs Elysées
For an investment of FF41 million (€6.25 million), including FF25m (€3.8m) in renovation work, Marionnaud, one of Europe's top three perfumery chains, opened its much-awaited showcase on the Champs-Elysées in Paris on December 2, 2000. Open seven days a week from 10:00 am to midnight, the 600 sq.m space, designed by architect Jean-François Bodin and event specialist Olivier Massar, is similar to the store recently opened in Marseilles, France.
Video screens show scenes from the city, a three-color system projects images on the walls, and a series of small rooms invites customers to stroll among displays holding some 20,000 references. The cash register rang more than 1,000 times on the first day of operation. Marionnaud's announced goal for the store is an annual turnover of about FF100m (€15.25m). The concept will be carried over to other major European cities.
